FAQs (frequently asked questions)
Q. Can I get a data sheet about the scanner?
A. Yes, check this link to the Digital Check Website
Q. How do I set up an endorsement?
A: From the ribbon bar, choose "Config". In config, choose "endorsement". Enter desired text in the "Endorsement" field, check the "Add Date" box if you want also to include today's date, and verify that the offset is 100 more or less. This controls the positioning of the text on the back of the check. Finally, check the box that says "EEndorser/imprinter on". Use the Save button at the bottom to close the window, and respond to the "Save Changes" message afterwards.
Q: Can I take a picture with a webcam each time a check is scanned ?
A; Yes. Install a compatible WebCam and test it first. Then, press the "config" button, choose "Advanced" tab. First press the "StartCap" button to verify that your webcam is supplying video. Then use "Test Camera" to capture a snapshot. If that works ok (you'll see a smaller version of the live feed) then press the "End Cap" (Capture), and finally check the box "Capture Picture with Check", and save the configuration. You'll notice that there is now a tab named "Picture".
Now, whenever you retrieve a check image the image view will show you if a picture is available with that check, and you can see it in the "Picture" tab.
Q: I'm getting a "lastfile error" . What is this and how do I fix it?
A: Everytime the scanner creates a new image it creates a new, unique file name. This name of the last file scanned is saved in the xpress.ini file, and it is updated at the end of each scanning session.. The program will never overwrite an existing image, so if you get this error it means that the current filename to be used already exists on file on the disk. use My Computer/Explorer to go to the folder associated with the listed filename (e.g "error with AAAB123f.tif" got to c:\ program files\ witsends software\ xpress\AAAB and look for the highest number file name listed, like "AAAB135f.tif" . In ChekXpressScan go to config and reset "lastfile" to a number higher than the last one found - like "AAAB136f.tif".
This occurs somtimes because a jam in the scanner will have created an image, but the lastfile name was not stored, so the system gets out of sync. Rare, but possible.
Q: When I start the program, the title bar shows that it's in Demo mode.
A; Each copy of CheXpressScan is licensed to a particular scanner. If the program has trouble finding the scanner (on account of USB problems) it can't verify the serial number. Or, the scanner could be the wrong one. Contact Tech Support at witsends.com (http://www.wistends.com) to help resolve this problem. We support all valid customers who have to change scanners for some reason and will re-issue a new release code if necessary.
Q; What if I want better images
A: The default is images stored as a G4 Tiff - perfectly good black and white images, and they are very efficient in storage - a front check image might be only 13 kbytes . For better quality, you could choose JPEG grayscale images (go to Config, then Options and choose JPG and Grayscale. these images are 10 times the storage of TIFF files, but storage capacity may not be a problem for you). If you're storing millions it might be an issue, but disk space is so cheap these days that you many not have a problem.
Finally, you might choose color images. They are a very accurate representation of the check, but also involve even more storage space. The CX-30 will make hi-res color images of very high quality, and this might me useful if your are using duplex imaging and want to see the backside of the check.
Related to changing the color format , you might want to consider the resolution. 200X100 format is the default for efficient tiff images, but you might want to choose 300x300. this is a 50% increase over 200x200, but it results in an image 2.25 larger than the previous. Of course, it is much more detailed and clerar, and especially if the endorsement side of the check, the backside, is of interest, then this is the setting with the best resolution and quality.
Q: I want to take pictures when I scazn a check. what do I do?
A; ChekXpressScan supports using a webcam to take pictures and associate them with a check image. Go to "Config", test your camera, and enable "Capture Picture with check". The program does not require TWAIN. It will accept any video input that is Video for Windows compatible. Almost every Webcam is.
When you recall a check image by double-clicking on a record in the database table, you'll see a checkbox indicating if a picture is available for this image. Double click on the "Picture Available" and you'll see the image.
